About Academic Certification

What is Academic Certification?

Academic Certification is the first of three mandatory steps toward licensure—followed by internship experience and successful completion of the registration examination.

The CACB, working on behalf of the Regulatory Organizations of Architecture in Canada (ROAC), assesses the academic qualifications of individuals with professional degrees or diplomas in architecture to determine whether they meet the Canadian Education Standard (CES). Successful applicants receive Academic Certification, which confirms their eligibility to begin the path toward becoming a licensed architect in Canada.

Why Do You Need Academic Certification?

Candidates must have their academic qualifications certified as having met the educational components of the requirement for entry to the professional as a part of the application process for registration or licensure with any of the Regulatory Organizations of Architecture in Canada.

You will need your academic certification number to register for the Internship in Architecture Program (IAP) in the province or territory where you intend to become a licensed architect.

Steps after Academic Certification?

After receiving Academic Certification, you become eligible to register for the Internship in Architecture Program (IAP) in any Canadian province or territory. Upon completing the internship and passing the Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC), you may apply for licensure and legally use the title “Architect.”
